The AV rating is the highest possible rating a personal injury attorney can achieve for legal skills and professional ethics. The Components of a Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating

Martindale-Hubbell, the oldest and most widely used law directory and lawyer rating system in the United States, determines lawyer ratings through a peer review process. Peer Review Ratings have two basic components: the General Ethical Standards Rating and the Legal Ability Rating. The General Ethical Standards Rating is an indication of attorney’s standards of ethics and conduct.  The only rating an attorney can receive is a “V”, which stands for “very high.” An attorney must receive this General Ethical Standards Rating order to be eligible to receive a Legal Ability Rating.

The second component of the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating is the Legal Abilities Rating. Also based on confidential peer reviews, three possible ratings are available for an attorney’s professional abilities. If an attorney is deemed to have “very high to preeminent” legal ability, an “A” is given. A “B” identifies a lawyer deemed to have  “high to very high” legal ability, and a “C” is given if a lawyer is thought to possess “good to high” legal abilities.  To be eligible to receive the highest possible AV-Rating, an attorney must be a member of the bar for at least 10 years.
